Engagement photo outfits and party dresses

For engagement photos, choose an outfit that moves when you walk, contrasts gently with the backdrop and has a clear, defined silhouette. For the engagement party, choose a dress in white, ivory or a color you love, cut for the venue and comfortable enough to stand and talk in for hours.

One dress can serve both, though many brides-to-be wear two: something softer for the camera and something more structured for the party.

What to wear for engagement photos

A camera picks up what a guest misses: creases, a slipping strap, a hem that stops moving. So what to wear for engagement photos is a different question from what to wear to the party.

Movement

A skirt that moves gives the photographer something to work with. Floor-length dresses with soft gathers, pleats, tiers or tulle catch the wind and follow you as you walk, which makes candid frames feel alive. Before the shoot, try walking, turning and sitting in the dress to see how the fabric falls. Very stiff fabrics hold a shape in a still portrait but do little in motion; very light fabrics move readily but can cling on a humid day.

Color against the backdrop

Think about where the photographs will be taken and choose a color that sits well against it.

Backdrop Colors that work
Beach or open field White, cream and soft blue look calm against sand, sky and pale grass
Garden or forest Red, cream and white stand out clearly against green
City streets and architecture A strong color such as red, or a clean white, stands apart from gray stone and glass
Golden hour Warm whites and creams glow in late-afternoon light; very cool whites can look blue

Silhouette

Photographs flatten a body into a shape, so a clear silhouette matters. A defined waist gives structure in full-length images. An off-the-shoulder or sweetheart neckline frames the face and collarbones in close portraits. If you plan seated or close-up shots, choose a bodice that holds its form when you sit.

Coordinating with your partner

Your partner's outfit should sit in the same palette and level of formality without matching yours exactly.

  • Palette: pick two or three colors for the pair and stay within them.
  • Formality: a floor-length gown asks for a suit or a tailored jacket; a midi pairs well with a shirt and trousers.
  • Texture: two plain fabrics side by side photograph more cleanly than two busy prints.

Practical notes for the shoot

  • Steam the dress on the morning of the shoot and carry it on a hanger, not folded.
  • Bring flat shoes for walking between locations, and keep your heels for the frames themselves.
  • If you plan two looks, choose two distinct silhouettes, for example one long and fluid, one fitted and shorter.
  • Pack a light layer for early-morning or evening sessions.

What to wear to an engagement party

Engagement parties vary more than any other wedding event. Some are a dinner for both families, some a cocktail evening with friends, some a formal ceremony with its own traditions. Start with who is hosting, where it will be held and at what time of day.

  • A family dinner at home or in a restaurant suits a refined midi dress.
  • A cocktail evening in a bar or hotel suits a fitted silhouette with a little more drama at the neckline or shoulder.
  • A formal celebration, or one that includes a traditional ceremony, can carry a floor-length gown.

The right engagement party outfit also lets you move easily. You will greet every guest, perhaps give a short speech and stand for photographs with both families. A waist that holds its shape without pinching, and a hem you will not trip on, matter more here than any trend.

White, ivory or a color?

A white engagement dress is the most common choice and signals the occasion clearly. Ivory and cream are softer alternatives that photograph with warmth. A color can be just as right: red is a classic in many Chinese and Vietnamese families, and a deep or bright shade sets you apart without needing white at all. For guests, the usual courtesy applies: leave white to the bride.

Sizing and timing

Standard sizes are S, M and L, and many designs also come in XL. A standard size can be adjusted at the bust, waist and hip, or a piece can be made in a custom size from your measurements: here is how to measure yourself for a dress, and our size guide gives every size in inches and centimeters. The model in our photos is 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) tall and wears a size S.

Every piece is made to order in our Ho Chi Minh City atelier. Order at least six weeks ahead for a standard size and eight weeks for a custom size: making takes about 7 to 10 days (15 to 20 for a custom size), and international delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days. If you might need to exchange a size, order earlier still.

Orders to the US and Canada may be charged import duties or taxes on delivery, which are not included at checkout; see our shipping policy. We offer exchanges rather than refunds. In Ho Chi Minh City you can book a fitting at our store; please contact us before you visit.
